Coaching
What is coaching
Coaching is the process of getting people to realise their potential. Often it is our own perceived limitations that hinder our effectiveness. Coaching is about empowering the coachee to discover their best self and thereby creating and sustaining new high levels of performance.
Until recently coaching was largely used in the world of sport. Today, however, almost 90% of companies use coaching (CIPD 2005). It is seen as a key strategy in meeting the complex issues associated with individual employee development.
“Something we were withholding made us weak until we found it was ourselves.”
Robert Frost
Why coaching works
A powerful alliance is developed between the coach and the coachee. To make the changes required to move them to the next level the coachee is both supported and challenged to take the necessary action. Because the commitment to the agreed actions are followed up in the coaching sessions the coachee achieves far better outcomes than if left to their own devices.
Unique approach
The model we uniquely employ for coaching is our integrated inside-outside coaching model. We enable coachees to:
- Improve and refresh key business Skills (‘the outside approach’)
- Reflect on Self and reaffirm their life values and motivators and devise strategies for meeting these values and motivators (‘the inside approach’)
- Develop Support networks to ensure they are successful after the coaching programme is completed
Benefits of our integrated insideoutside coaching model
- Coaching requirements vary greatly for each individual. By providing both ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ coaching support the Sharry People Development approach can offer the right support, whatever the requirement.
- Coaching increases productivity, improves communication and increases staff commitment
- Coaching helps people feel more confident, self motivated and generally better about themselves

- Coaching develops the competencies and skills (often interpersonal skills) necessary to succeed in the role
- Coaching delivers on training by ensuring the valuable learning gained from a training programme is implemented back in the workplace

Integrated inside-outside coaching model
The process
A company’s success in achieving its strategy is dependent on the skills and commitment of its people. In today's fast changing society there are many challenges to be faced in work or elsewhere. The integrated inside-outside coaching model ensures people are empowered to face these challenges effectively. Our process is as follows:
- Group Session/Workshop (optional)
- Meeting with management to agree outcomes (optional)
- First session with coachee to set expectations and agree success criteria
- Second and subsequent sessions
- Mid-programme evaluation to check on progress
- Further coaching sessions, if required
- Final session and evaluate in line with success criteria
- Report back to management (optional)
The number of coaching sessions varies but it is suggested that a minimum of six sessions are required for best effect.
